The garlic campaign in Andalusia has concluded, according to
forecasts, with a harvest of near 35.000 MT of very good quality.
The produce is being sold to quite acceptable prices according
to the APROCOA president.
The average production of each one of the approximately 2000
hectares dedicated to the culture of garlic in Andalusia this
year, most of them in Cordova, lays between 15 and 20 MT. Despite
of the registered reduction in the acreage, we have finally obtained
a harvest similar to last year¡¯s harvest. Due to the good prices,
the sector anticipates to recover the acreage for the next campaign
and an acreage of 3000 hectares will be seeded.
However, this is still a lot less than the 8000 the sector used
to seed back in 1993. In that year the sector started to feel
the hard competition of Chinese garlic that, in spite of its inferior
quality, began to enter the European Union.
Nevertheless, with the 70.000 MT harvested in Pedro?eras (Spain¡¯s
main producing zone), plus the 35.000 MT from Andalusia and the
30.000 MT from the rest of Spain, the Iberian country is still
the largest garlic producer of the EU.
